UMLAHLANKOSI: A SERIES
multi-plate etchings on newsprint grey somerset velvet
(2025 - ongoing)
56 x 76cm
This series of prints were produced at edition ~ verso print studio. These prints are the result of intuitive experimentation in the soft ground medium. Rubbing the etching plates against the ground, grass, bark and fungi of the studio garden allows the land to quite literally make their impression. These soft ground impressions were then combined with hard ground etching, and scratched-out collages of archival photographs (registered in photograveur) that appear in the project, A Funeral For... The result is a series of multi-plate etchings that play in the space between the archive’s contexts and recognise the arranged nature of impermanent recorded histories.
“Archival work is about pushing up against the indexical whilst simultaneously being subjected to its very fact. It is about thinking through the choreography of what is transient within the archive... A repair of the approach to working with collection materials”
