PROCLAMATION 73

120 photographs (variable sizes), mural & audio (2018)

Proclamation 73 is an archival project initiated, researched and curated by Zara Julius and Chandra Frank that explores the family archives of people racialised as ‘coloured’ and ‘indian’ in Durban under the 1950 Group Areas Act of apartheid South Africa

Proclamation 73 covers a large time period, and takes a non-linear approach to the fragmented narratives and histories that emerged out of this project - working with archives that are rarely viewed alongside each other. Through portraying over 120 images submitted by the public, archival materials, and selected work from the collection of Afrapix documentary photographers, this exhibition invites viewers to think through questions of representation, the quotidian, erasure, & intimacy.
